Transmissions Terminology -  Your own automotive lexicon, concepts and reference checklist

** NOTE: At Rebuilt Automatic Transmissions & Gears, we ONLY provide the ultimate in quality products and services – we specialize in REMANUFACTURED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.

What is a rebuilt transmission?

Transmission problems and/or diagnostics might have you considering repair, rebuild, replacement,  new/used, aftermarket or remanufactured products and solutions for your automatic transmissions needs, specifications, configurations, application,  vehicle and requirements.

Ill-repute and unscrupulous providers and shops have done the industry a disservice and remanufacturers globally, now take the time and effort to establish trust FIRST, by providing the best quality products and service excellence they can muster. We prefer to advise all clients to exercise prudence in dealing with reputable vendors. We provide an extensive, reliable, collaborative, global sourcing network and expertise, specialty, quality remanufacturing processes, resources, including skilled staff, state-of-the-art equipment and OEM parts (inventory ready and at hand) in-house.

First step en-route to recovery for your transmissions woes follows the primary path of proper diagnosis,  as this will be the decision-point and input necessary, to determine what type of solution is needed and appropriate.

Repaired transmission normally the cheapest process, as it does not require removing and disassembling the whole transmission (standard leaks, fluids, small failures, routine care and maintenance etc.)

Overhauled transmission, an overhaul requires the transmission be removed and disassembled.

Sometimes the following terms are used in industry as interchangeable: “exchanged,” “swapped”, “rebuilt,” “remanufactured”, “reconditioned” or “overhauled,” transmissions.

Mostly it is taken and understood to mean at the very least, most of the following:

1: All internal and external parts, including case and housing, have been thoroughly cleaned and inspected
2. The valve body has been disassembled and thoroughly cleaned and inspected
3. Soft-parts replaced/new: All bands have been replaced with new or relined bands.
4. Large % of new OEM parts All the following parts have been replaced with new parts:
    a. Lined friction plates
    b. Internal and external seals including seals that are bonded to metal parts
    c. All sealing rings
    d. Gaskets
    e. Organic media disposable type (if the transmission is so equipped)

All impaired defective, or substantially worn parts not mentioned above have been restored to a sound condition or replaced with new, rebuilt, or unimpaired parts. All measuring and adjusting of such parts has been performed as necessary (to OEM specification).

The transmission’s electronic components, if so equipped, have been inspected and found to be functioning properly or have been replaced with new, rebuilt, or unimpaired OEM components that function properly.

The torque converter has been inspected and serviced shell has been resealed, and the unit has been pressure tested.

Soft part transmission repair or part  kits can  consists of
    a.         Clutches and bands
    b.         Internal and external seals
    c.         Sealing rings
    d.         Lip seals "O" rings
    e.         Gaskets.

Generally the ‘hard parts’ of a transmission, as stated earlier,  include but are not limited to
    a.         Planet gears
    b.         Drums
    c.         Shafts
    d.         Pumps
    e.         Converter

Elaborating on the abovementioned, we will not turn to what you can expect from our remanufactured automatic transmissions and processes.

We will briefly attempt to summarize, explain and/or define the following terms for clarification, easy reference and informational purposes:

  • rebuilt transmission

The unit is not necessarily ‘overhauled’ per se. In troubleshooting some parts are/might be  replaced, but not all. Not all parts are OEM, new, some are just cleaned, swapped or come from other old transmissions

  • performance transmission

Upgrade and power-driven transmissions, usually for racing, sports, specialty requirements and configurations, turbo-charging, special materials, expert clearances and refining advanced remanufacturing processes and applications for sophisticated power, torque and performance engine/transmission requirements. Performance transmissions require an expert hand to match, fit and remanufacture precision clearances, lips and dimensions to optimize your transmission to its fullers, realizing its fullest potential.

  • used transmission

Parts of/from or whole transmission, older second-hand transmissions, discontinued models, imports,  salvaged, aftermarket product typically or from older replacement, spares, low mileage auction and/or scrapped vehicles, ‘removed’ transmissions from car wrecks and the like.

  • overdrive transmission

Illustrative example provided below: (Manual in this case, NOT automatic)

A sample ‘overdrive unit’ comes with an aluminum-case gearbox, a new tailshaft, drag racing upgrade kits for enhanced performance and acceleration – balancing act between performance and fuel efficiency, while not sacrificing smooth process, gear changes and shifting for that matter – ENSURING THE ULTIMATE RIDE.

  • transmission rebuild kit(s)

Both retail, factory OEM, transmission standard repair kits, as well as specialist, pre-packed, remanufactured, custom transmission kits are available in the marketplace today. Overhaul, (including OE quality paper gaskets, rubber lip seals, O rings, pan gaskets (cork or fiber), metal clad seals, and sealing ring kit , in some cases an older applications also pan gaskets and case gaskets), banner (Transmission Overhaul Kit, and a standard set of friction clutch plates.) and master kits (Transmission Overhaul Kit, standard set of friction clutch plates and a standard set of steel clutch plates), typically are sold.

AND NOW,  FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT…
                       OUR ‘RAT’ (Remanufactured Automatic Transmission)

  • remanufactured transmission

Our  category of preference, also for our quality remanufactured automatic transmission solutions,  the ‘remanufactured transmissions’, naming convention or descriptor fits best. It typically includes automatic transmissions that have been:

a. Disassembled, cleaned, complexly and completely remanufactured, to deliver a BETTER THAN NEW transmission, precision-engineered and machined/produced to manufacturer's specification, (meeting/exceeding them ), at a fraction of the cost.
b. All necessary hard parts have been replaced – all new OEM parts
c. It might even have a complete overhaul kit in it
d. Turn-key solutions that could be specialist pre-built,  factory-manufactured, with a set price (lower due to inventory carried and in-house capabilities)
e. Pre-tested, prior to shipping,  to ensure a quality remanufacture and working product.

IN SHORT SUMMARY:

OUR QUALITY TOTALLY REMANUFACTURED,
‘BETTER THAN NEW’ TRANSMISSIONS,

BECOME …
